Install the official or any other binary for GIMP as usual on macOS, then install a virtual machine and a Linux in that, with GIMP and the resynthesizer plugin ready-made to play well from a package repository. Use that for the Enhance filters (if you work exclusively in the Virtual Machine you might of yourse skip the macOS part of installing.

OS X: GIMP is a fantastic free alternative to Photoshop for all desktop operating systems, but on Mac it was a bit of a pain to set it up, because you needed to install X11. Gimp now, however, comes with a standard DMG installer.

Now to install GIMP on your Mac, you just open the downloaded DMG file and, like you do with other Mac apps, drag the GIMP.app to your Applications folder. Easy as pie.

Which version of GIMP works well with MacOS 10.12 Sierra?

Current version is 2.8.18 but, I read that the last stable version that works with Sierra is 2.8.14.

Is GIMP blocked from installing due to being an unknown developer? That is what I get when try to open the dmg.

I thought the way around this black was to go to System Preferences/Security & Privacy/General Tab and change the setting from allow apps downloaded from App Store & identified developers to allow from anywhere.

Requires enabling that 3rd choice using Terminal command. Best chm to pdf converter online.
